OK, totally inappropriate seeing as how this post is actually about a birthday present I made for my dear friends’ little girl’s first birthday. But seriously, how much fun can you really have if you can’t dirty it up, at least just a little bit…and I like to do it every chance I get! And Yes, all those sexual innuendos are there on purpose and I absolutely mean them. Do you know how hard it is for me to hold back and not turn every post into a brown-chicken brown-cow porno shoot. We are talking serious self control! I usually make men blush with half the shit that comes flying out of my mouth! Lucky for me most people who don’t know me think I am this sweet, reserved, quiet person. HA! yea freakin’ right! Truth be told I’m anything but that! All that being said, I’m not always uncouth, I at least know how to whisper at an inaudible tone so that the surrounding uppities don’t get their panties all twisted.
So now where was I…oh yea, balls. 🙂 Felted balls to be exact. These are always a big winner with little kids and pets. I made 2 for my niece for her 1st birthday and my cat has a few of his own as well…the felted kind not the anatomical ones. These toys are great and quite simple to make, they just take some time as do all handmade gifts. All you need is wool, water and soap, I also threw in a bit of mohair for good measure.
You see it works like this, wool fibers have scales and when those scales are agitated in a soapy solution they lock together. You just gently work the wet wool back and forth from hand to hand thus forming a ball. Then once you have the size you want rinse out the excess soap and set it in a warm sunny window to dry. I usually toss mine in the dryer because it speeds up the process…I am all about instant gratification. That and since Jimi has his own balls he recognizes what I am doing and is usually under my feet prancing and chirping because he thinks I’m making it for him. The dryer is a cat free safety zone, pretty much the only one in my house!
Here is a close up of Naomi Jain’s balls…and I will just leave it at that! 🙂
